Laser Hair Removal in Newmarket: What You Get & What Determines Your Cost
How laser hair removal works, how many sessions you actually need, what affects the per-session price, and why the long-term math typically favours laser over waxing or shaving.
The biggest hesitation we hear from clients considering laser hair removal isn't whether it works — it's whether the math makes sense. Permanent reduction is appealing; the upfront commitment makes people pause.
This post lays out how laser hair removal is priced, how many sessions you should plan for by treatment area, what affects your total cost, and why it tends to come out ahead of ongoing waxing over time.
How laser hair removal is priced
Pricing is per session, per treatment area. Most clinics also offer package pricing if you commit to a series upfront (which you'll need to anyway — see the next section). Per-session pricing varies by area: smaller areas like the upper lip cost less, larger areas like full legs cost more. Significantly cheaper than typical Newmarket-area pricing usually means an IPL (intense pulsed light) device rather than a true laser — different technology, less consistent results, often more sessions needed. Cheaper isn't always cheaper when you have to do twelve sessions instead of six.
We'll quote your specific per-session and package pricing during your free consultation, based on the area you want treated.

How many sessions do you really need?
This is the question that affects your total cost more than per-session pricing.
Hair grows in three phases — anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser only effectively destroys hair follicles in the anagen phase, which is why a single session can never get every hair. At any given moment, only 20–30% of your hair is in anagen on a given body area.
This is why the standard recommendation is 6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart for most areas. Each session catches a different cohort of hairs in their growth phase.
Some areas need more:
- Underarms and bikini area — hormonally influenced, often need 8–10 sessions
- Face (upper lip, chin) — also hormonally influenced for many clients, often needs 8–10 sessions plus annual touch-ups
- Legs and arms — usually respond well to 6–8 sessions
After your initial series, most clients book a single touch-up session every 12–18 months to catch any new growth.
Factors that affect your session count:
- Hair color — dark hair on light skin responds best (the laser targets pigment). Blonde, red, or grey hair is harder to treat
- Skin tone — modern medical lasers work on most skin tones, but treatment parameters vary
- Hormonal factors — pregnancy, PCOS, and hormonal medications can trigger new growth
- Area treated — facial hair is usually more stubborn than body hair
Laser vs waxing vs shaving — the long-term picture
Most clients who do the comparison find that laser comes out ahead within a few years compared to ongoing waxing — and saves significant time even compared to shaving. The math depends on your specific area and frequency, but the pattern is consistent:
- Versus waxing — ongoing per-session costs add up year over year. A finite laser series with occasional annual touch-ups typically pays for itself within roughly two to four years for most treatment areas.
- Versus shaving — the dollar comparison is closer, but laser eliminates the daily/weekly routine, ingrown hairs, and razor irritation. Most clients consider time savings and skin health a meaningful part of the value.
Larger treatment areas (full legs, back) tend to break even faster than smaller ones (upper lip) because the per-session waxing cost is higher. We'll walk through the specific math for your treatment area during your consultation.
What affects the price you pay at any given clinic
Per-session pricing varies between Newmarket clinics for legitimate reasons:
Equipment quality. A true medical-grade laser (diode, Nd:YAG, alexandrite) costs the clinic significantly more than an IPL device, but produces faster results in fewer sessions. The cheaper "deals" you see advertised are often IPL — which technically works, but typically requires significantly more sessions to match laser results.
Skin-tone compatibility. Some lasers work safely on darker skin tones; others don't. Clinics with multi-platform setups (more than one laser type) can treat a wider range of skin tones safely.
Practitioner training. Settings calibration matters — under-treated and you waste a session, over-treated and you risk burns or pigmentation changes. Trained, experienced operators charge more for good reason.
Single-session vs package. Buying a multi-session package upfront is almost always cheaper per session than buying one at a time. Ask any clinic about their package discounts.
Touch-up policy. Ask whether annual maintenance is offered at a discount or full price. It adds up over years.
Why our equipment matters
We use a true medical-grade laser (not IPL), calibrated by a trained operator who has been doing this work at our Newmarket office for years. The practical difference for you:
- Faster sessions (a typical underarm treatment takes 5–10 minutes)
- Fewer total sessions to complete the series
- Comfort features (built-in cooling between pulses)
- Skin-tone compatibility across most Fitzpatrick types
We do a patch test for first-time clients before any full session, just to confirm settings are dialled in correctly for your specific skin and hair type.
Alternatives worth considering
If laser hair removal isn't the right fit for you, here are the alternatives we recommend (and offer):
- Wax & threading is the better choice for small areas, infrequent maintenance, or hair that's too light for the laser to target. Mitra personally does most of our brow shaping work.
- At-home shaving remains fine for clients who don't mind the routine and don't have ingrown hair issues.
