Lip Flip in Newmarket: What to Expect & How It Compares to Filler

How a lip flip works, what affects the cost, when it's the better choice over lip filler, and how to know if it's right for you. Honest guide from a Newmarket med spa.

A lip flip is one of the most-asked-about Botox treatments at our Newmarket office. Most clients come in with the same set of questions: how does it actually work, how does it compare to filler, how long does it last, and is it right for me? This post walks through all of that — and lays out the factors that determine your individual cost so you have a sense of what to expect before your free consultation.

What is a lip flip?

A lip flip is a small dose of Botox placed along the upper lip border. Instead of adding volume the way filler does, the Botox relaxes the orbicularis oris muscle so the upper lip subtly "rolls out" — making the visible portion of your lip appear fuller without changing its actual size.

The treatment takes 5 to 10 minutes start to finish. There's no recovery period and no visible signs you've had anything done — most clients are back at their desk or running errands within the hour. Unlike filler, which uses needles to deposit hyaluronic acid into the lip itself, a lip flip uses tiny surface injections. Most of our clients describe it as "a quick pinch" rather than a procedure.

What affects the cost of a lip flip

A lip flip uses a small number of units of Botox (or the equivalent in Dysport) — typically a handful — depending on your anatomy and the result you're after. Both Botox and Dysport are priced per unit, so your individual cost depends on how many units it takes to achieve the look you're going for. We'll determine that during your free consultation, and quote your full cost before any treatment is performed.

What's included with every lip flip at our office:

  • A free consultation before your first treatment
  • The Botox or Dysport itself, sourced from the original manufacturer
  • A 14-day follow-up window in case you want a touch-up at no extra charge
  • Aftercare instructions and direct access to your practitioner with questions

A note for shopping around: at any clinic, ask what's included and who's doing the injection before you book. Per-unit pricing is the cleanest comparison; clinics that quote "by area" or "by session" can hide a unit count that doesn't match your actual need.

Lip flip vs lip filler — cost & results compared

These two treatments solve different problems and most clients don't know that going in. Here's the honest comparison.

| Feature | Lip Flip | Lip Filler | | Mechanism | Botox relaxes upper lip muscle | Hyaluronic acid adds volume | | Pricing model | Per unit (small number of units) | Per syringe of Juvederm | | Results last | 6–10 weeks | 6–18 months | | Visible change | Subtle, "natural" | More obvious | | Best for | Thin upper lip line, gummy smile | Visibly fuller lips | | Downtime | None | 24–48 hr swelling |

A lip flip is the better choice if you want a small enhancement, you have a "gummy smile" where too much gum shows when you smile, or you're not sure you want a permanent-feeling change. Filler is the right answer if you want noticeably fuller lips and you're committed to maintaining them.

There's also a combination treatment — a lip flip plus a small amount of Juvederm filler — that produces a more balanced result for clients who want some volume without going dramatic. We offer Juvederm in our Newmarket office and most lip-augmentation cases use a single syringe. We'll walk through whether the combo is right for you during your consultation.

How long does a lip flip last?

Most clients see the lip flip effect for 6 to 10 weeks, which is shorter than other Botox areas (forehead Botox typically lasts 3–4 months). The reason is muscular: the orbicularis oris is one of the most active muscles in your face — it works every time you talk, eat, smile, or drink — so the Botox metabolizes faster.

First-time clients often book a single session to see how they like the result. Repeat clients tend to schedule sessions every 8–10 weeks to maintain a continuous effect. We don't push package pricing for lip flips — most clients prefer to book session-by-session.

What to expect at your Newmarket appointment

Your first lip flip appointment is about 45 minutes: 30 minutes for the consultation (medical history, goals, photos for our records), then 5–10 minutes for the actual injection.

The injection itself is light. Most clients describe it as feeling like a series of small pinches at the edge of the upper lip. We use a 31-gauge needle (the smallest available for cosmetic injections) to keep discomfort minimal.

Aftercare for the first 4 hours:

  • No lying flat
  • No vigorous exercise
  • No straws or pursing the lips heavily
  • No facial massages or treatments

You'll start to notice the effect within 3 to 7 days, with full results visible at the two-week mark. If after two weeks you feel the effect is too subtle, our 14-day touch-up window covers a small additional dose at no extra charge.

Is a lip flip right for you?

You're a good candidate for a lip flip if any of these describe you:

  • Your upper lip looks thin in photos when you smile
  • You have a "gummy smile" — too much gum shows when you smile widely
  • You want a subtle change and aren't ready for filler
  • You like your natural lip shape but want it to read as slightly fuller

You're probably not a good candidate if:

  • You want noticeably fuller lips — filler is the right call
  • You've had a previous bad reaction to Botox
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have a key event in the next 7 days — give the result time to settle

The honest answer for most of these questions is "let's talk about it during your consultation." Our consultations are free, and there's no pressure to book the treatment.
