Microneedling Results Timeline: What to Expect Week by Week
What microneedling actually does to your skin, what the realistic results timeline looks like (day-by-day and week-by-week), and how to know if it's the right treatment for you.
Microneedling is the treatment our Newmarket clients ask about most after their first facial — usually because they've heard it works but they don't quite know what to expect. The most useful thing we can share isn't a dramatic before-and-after photo. It's an honest week-by-week timeline of what happens to your skin between the moment you walk out of your first session and the moment you book your second.
This post is that timeline, plus the context to know whether microneedling is the right call for you.
Quick primer — what microneedling actually does
Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the upper layer of your skin using fine medical-grade needles. The "injury" sounds dramatic — it isn't. The needle depth is measured in millimeters and the goal is to trigger your body's natural collagen and elastin response, which is what produces the visible improvement over the following weeks.
We use the Dermaroller eDermaStamp, a Health-Canada-licensed medical-grade device. This matters: there's a meaningful difference between a true medical microneedling tool used by a trained operator and the at-home dermarollers sold online. The clinical-grade tool penetrates to a depth that triggers collagen production; the at-home version mostly just irritates the surface.
Microneedling treats:
- Fine lines (especially around eyes, mouth, and forehead)
- Acne scarring (rolling scars and shallow box scars)
- Skin texture and pore size
- Stretch marks
- Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Overall skin quality and "glow"
What it doesn't treat: deep ice-pick acne scars (laser is better), active cystic acne (treat the acne first), deep wrinkles caused by muscle movement (Botox is the answer there). For more, see our microneedling service page.
Realistic results timeline
This is what we tell every first-time client to expect. Individual recovery varies, but the pattern is consistent.
Day 0 — Right after the session
Your skin will look pink to red, similar to a moderate sunburn. This is normal and expected — it's the inflammatory response that triggers the collagen rebuild. You'll feel mild tightness and warmth in the treated area for the rest of the day. Most clients are presentable enough to go to work the same afternoon, though we recommend booking later in the day so you can go straight home.
What to do that night: minimal cleansing only (no actives, no scrubs, no retinol, no vitamin C), barrier-friendly moisturizer, and absolutely no makeup.
Days 1 to 3 — Peeling and brightening
Mild flaking and dryness as the upper layer of treated skin begins to shed. Don't pick or peel — let it fall away naturally. You'll start to notice a brighter "freshly-revealed" tone underneath even at this early stage.
Skincare during this window: gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturizer, and SPF 30+ during the day (your skin is more sun-sensitive while it's healing). Skip retinol, AHA/BHA, vitamin C, and any physical exfoliants for the full week.
Week 1 — Smoother, softer skin
By the end of week one your skin should feel noticeably smoother to the touch. Makeup glides on better. Pores look slightly tighter. Most clients describe this as "my skin just feels good." This is the early phase of the collagen response — what you're seeing is mostly surface improvement; the deeper changes are still building.
You can resume your normal skincare routine at this point, with one exception: hold off on retinol for one more week if your skin is still sensitive.
Weeks 2 to 4 — Texture improvements visible
This is where the real change begins. Texture irregularities soften, fine lines look less defined, and any acne scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation begins to fade. The improvement is subtle week-over-week — most clients don't notice it day-to-day but see a clear difference when they compare to a photo from before the session.
Weeks 4 to 6 — Peak collagen result
Your skin's collagen production peaks around the four-to-six-week mark. This is the point at which a single session has produced its maximum result. If you took a photo at week zero and one now, the difference is visible — better tone, smoother texture, fewer fine lines.
For best results, this is when we typically book your next session. Microneedling is a series-based treatment — most clients see optimal results from 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with the exact number depending on what we're treating.
Months 3 and beyond — Continued slow improvement
Even after a single session, collagen continues to build slowly for several months. With the right at-home routine (gentle cleanser, daily SPF, retinol introduced after week 2, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C) the results compound rather than fade.
How to know if microneedling is right for you
Microneedling is the right call if:
- You have fine lines or early-stage wrinkling
- You have shallow acne scarring or post-acne texture
- Your pores look enlarged
- Your skin tone is uneven from sun damage or melasma
- You want a single treatment that addresses multiple concerns at once
It's not the right call if:
- You have active cystic acne (treat that first)
- You have a fresh sunburn or are currently using strong retinol
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have a history of keloid scarring
- You're after a "glow for tomorrow" — microneedling builds slowly. Book an OxyGeneo facial for an immediate event-day glow instead.
For deep ice-pick acne scars or significant pigmentation issues, we'll discuss whether to combine microneedling with another treatment (like a chemical peel or PRP) or refer you to a dermatologist for laser options.
Booking your first session
Your first microneedling session at our Newmarket office runs about 90 minutes — 30 minutes for the consultation and skin analysis, then 60 minutes for the treatment itself (which includes numbing time before the needling).
Pricing varies depending on the products and serums used during the treatment. We'll quote your full cost during the consultation, and series pricing is available if you commit to a course of three or more sessions.
The consultation is free and includes a skin analysis. We'll tell you honestly whether microneedling is the right next step for what you're trying to fix — and if it isn't, we'll point you toward the treatment that is.
